From birth, the task of the brain is to establish and reinforce connections between neurons. Dr. Montessori’s approach on brain development in young children coincides with much of the most recent brain research. Dr. Montessori discovered from her observations that the early years of a child’s life is the period when the brain’s capacity for learning is at its peak. To give us an idea of the magnitude of this migration, neuroscientist Pasko Rakic has said that if nerve cells were the size of people, it would be as if the whole population of the United States were to migrate from one coast to the other (See photographs below from Restak, 2001, 12). It is also amazing that so few neurons go astray on this journey (Herschkowitz, Herschkowitz, 2001). The picture on the left is of neurons migrating, and on the right, neurons traveling along supporting cells called glial cells. Some of these cells can travel a few centimeters, which on a comparative scale, is the equivalent of a person walking from New York to California (Restak, 2001). Synapses By the twenty-fourth week, the vital organs are formed in the baby. The heart and lungs are developed and the brain has billions and billions of neurons that have branches called â€Å"dendrites,† which receive signals as an extension, or axon, which then transmits the signal further. Then a question comes about in my mind that why there has to be any answers or meaning to a work. Why cant I just enjoy a poem for the way it sounds when it is read aloud? Why cant I just enjoy a song for the way the words are put together and enjoy the music? It can be fun sometimes to analyze a work and pick out things like wonderful metaphors. I can see where that comes in to literature. What I hate is when I read a really great story and I enjoy it and then I go to class and get hounded for answers and I give them and theyre not right because I felt different about a story than someone else. Bartorillo 2 The Melting Pot seems to be about anyone and everyone being accepted as Americans except Blacks. The second set of four lines is kind of funny because it gives you several names that sound un-American and when they come to be an American they lose that and use a more American version of their name. Even when people came through Ellis Island they usually took a different name or made theirs shorter to be more American. The next four lines read about a Black man who is unaccepted as an American even though hes been there waiting for it. The poem seems to say that no matter where youre from if youre white you can become a white American no matter what country youre from. It seems to say that were divided into Whites and Blacks regardless of nationalities. The end of the poem is where Blacks decide that theyre going to be who they are and be proud of it and they dont care about being accepted or not. So that was my own interpretation of a poem.
